2020 MTV VMA Nominations Include BTS, EXO, Red Velvet, MONSTA X, G(I)-DLE And TXT

The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards are coming soon, and the nominations have just been revealed! For K-pop fans, this also means several important nominations and recognition of some of the important artists in the Korean music field.

This year, the awards show will be held on Sunday, August 30th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. However, live shows will be happening all over New York City in Queens, The Bronx, Staten Island, and more.

Check out the list of K-pop groups below who have been nominated for various awards!

BTS:
Best Pop (“ON”)
Best Choreography (“ON” – Choreography by Son Sung Deuk, Lee Ga Hun, Lee Byung Eun)
Best K-pop

EXO:
Best K-pop (“Obsession”)

MONSTA X:
Best K-pop (“Someone’s Someone”)

(G)I-DLE:
Best K-pop (“Oh My God”)

Red Velvet:
Best K-pop (“Psycho”)

TXT:
Best K-pop (“9 and Three Quarters (Run Away)”)

One thing that is sure not to escape fans’ notice is that MONSTA X has, for the second year in a row, been nominated under the Best K-pop category with a song that was released in English and under their American label. Since this talented group has many amazing Korean releases that do qualify for the K-pop category, as well as ones that do qualify for the normal “English” pop categories, we wonder why the MTV VMAs continue to nominate MONSTA X’s English-language releases under the Best K-pop category. Is anything a Korean artist ever releases going to be deemed as K-pop, whether it’s actually hip-hop, rap, in English or another language, etc? Or are the people nominating these artists and their songs and videos not truly paying attention to what language they’re singing in or under which labels the songs are being released? Or, as some fans fear, are most Korean artists simply going to be boxed into the Best K-pop category even when they might be deserving in other categories as well? Either way, we find this to be an interesting circumstance, especially as MONSTA X fans pointed out this “mistake” last year to MTV.

Congratulations to all the deserving nominees! What are your thoughts on the nominations? Let us know by tweeting to @whatthekpop1!
