WTK Drama Review: How ”Hospital Playlist” Brings Laughter and Healing To Its Viewers Through Life Experiences and Music

From director Shin Won Ho and writer Lee Woo Jung, who brought us the hit ”Reply” series, comes another masterpiece entitled ”Hospital Playlist”!

Medical dramas have always been a hit genre, but combining it with music resulted in something truly special: ‘’Hospital Playlist.’’ Since it is in a hospital setting, the story focuses on the relationships of doctors, patients, colleagues, families, and loved ones. It also dives into the every day aspects of the hospital, drawing viewers’ interest.

The story revolves around the lives of five doctors who became friends in medical school and work at the same hospital. Despite their difficult routines in the medical field, they manage to unwind by forming a band. Ahn Jeong Won (Yoo Yeon Seok) is the chaebol and youngest heir of Yulje Medical Center (where all his friends are currently working). He works as a pediatric surgeon, but his dream is to become a priest. He is very soft-hearted towards his patients but cold-hearted towards his colleagues. Lee Ik Joon (Jo Jung Suk) belongs to general surgery, and his expertise is in liver transplant. He has a child named Uju (Kim Jun). He is the joker of the group and a fun-to-be-with person since he likes to party. Kim Jun Wan (Jung Kyung Ho) is the perfectionist cardiothoracic surgeon and one of the best in his field. He is also in love with Ik Joon’s sister, Lee Ik Soon (Kwak Sun Young). Yang Seok Hyeong (Kim Dae Myung) is also a chaebol and is an assistant professor in the obstetrics and gynecology department. He is socially withdrawn and is known to be mama’s boy. Chae Song Hwa (Jeon Mi Do) is the only female in the group and works as an associate professor in the neurosurgery department.

”Hospital Playlist” is the second installment of the Wise Life series following ‘”Prison Playbook.” Due to the popularity of “Hospital Playlist,” it became a hit program which became the ninth highest-rated Korean drama in cable television history..

One interesting part of the “Hospital Playlist” story is how the main characters became friends despite their opposite personalities and different specializations, despite working as doctors in same hospital. It’s very cute that they all love bonding through trivial things such as having a meal together or playing music together in a band. As such, despite their busy schedule, every one is always there whenever someone needs a shoulder to lean on or a hand to hold.

The drama’s focus is on doctors’ sincerity in the call of duty and their strong empathy towards their patients, colleagues, and loved ones. As we all know, hospitals are where lives are born, deaths are pronounced, wounds are treated, and pain is healed in time.

The main characters are very heart warming to watch, and it’s amazing that all the main cast have musical backgrounds which made them perfect for their roles.

The drama is composed of only 12 episodes, but this series really deserves attention. It is a drama which shows viewers how to appreciate the beauty of life in seemingly trivial things. It is also a healing drama that teaches many life lessons about respect, friendship, and relationships.

Every episode is witty and full of facts, and the series does not drag either. It is a medical drama, but is mixed with romance and comedy that makes it more entertaining.

Overall, the drama is hilarious, yet emotional. It covers all aspects of life: faith in God, love, humanity, empathy, generosity, friendship, music, and more. Using these topics, the director and production team succeeded in making a meaningful drama which touched many viewers.

Meanwhile, a second season of “Hospital Playlist” is set to premier in 2021!
